DARCELLE XV

 

A DETAILED PORTRAIT OF WALTER COLE, AKA DARCELLE XV, THE OLDEST WORKING DRAG QUEEN IN THE WORLD. 

BORN WALTER COLE, HE SERVED IN THE ARMED FORCES UNTIL THE LATE '50S, AFTER WHICH HE LIVED A "CONVENTIONAL" LIFE IN PORTLAND WITH HIS WIFE AND TWO CHILDREN.  BY 1969, HE HAD DEVELOPED THE "ALTER EGO" DARCELLE AND CAME OUT AS GAY.  HE LEFT HIS WIFE AND BEGAN A RELATIONSHIP WITH ROXY NEUHARDT. 

DURING THE 1970S, COLE CREATED THE DARCELLE XV SHOWPLACE WHICH BECAME A CULTURAL HUB AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE GAY LIBERATION AND SEXUAL REVOLUTION IN THE 1960S AND 1970S IN PORTLAND.

IN THIS DOCUMENTARY, DIRECTOR TRAVIS ZARIWNY INTERVIEWS DARCELLE XV AND THE INSPIRATIONAL TROUPE THAT PERFORMS WITH HER: POISON WATERS, ALEXIS CAMPBELL STAR, BEBISTA J., BOLIVIA CARMICHAELS, CASSIE NOVA, AND MISS B. HAVEN. 

IN A CAREER SPANNING OVER 50 YEARS, DARCELLE XV HAS BECOME A POWERFUL MULTI-GENERATIONAL, 

MULTI-CULTURAL, MULTI-GENDER VOICE AND ADVOCATE FOR DIVERSITY AND GENDER-BASED EQUALITY.
